Why Is Every Pair of Reading Glasses
in a Different Room?

Friend...
I have reached that magical season of life where I own enough pairs of reading glasses to open a small optical department...
...and I still can't find a single one.
Now before anybody gets all fancy and tells me to keep one pair in the same place...
Bless your heart.
That ship sailed somewhere around 2018.
Last Tuesday I went looking for my reading glasses because I needed to read the directions on a can of cream of chicken soup.
Don't judge me.
These companies must think we're all eagles.
The print gets smaller every year.
Or maybe my eyeballs are just giving up one tiny letter at a time.
Either way...
I couldn't find my glasses.
So naturally...
I started looking.
The first place?
The kitchen.
Because that's where everything disappears.
I opened the junk drawer.
No glasses.
Just fourteen rubber bands, three dead batteries, enough ketchup packets to feed a baseball team, and a key that probably belongs to Noah's Ark.
Still no glasses.
❤️ Pull Up a Chair, Friend...

Welcome home.

Next stop...
The bathroom.
No glasses.
Just six bottles of lotion with one squirt left in each.
A hairbrush that somehow contains enough hair to knit a sweater.
And three different tubes of lipstick that all look exactly the same once I put them on.
Then I checked my purse.
Now, after last week's archaeological dig, I wasn't expecting much.
But I did find:
Two peppermints.
A tape measure.
Three ink pens that have been retired since George Strait had dark hair.
An old grocery list.
A Band-Aid.
A cough drop.
Half a granola bar.
No glasses.
At this point...
I was convinced somebody had broken into my house...
Not to steal anything valuable.
Just to hide my reading glasses.
Probably with the TV remote.
They're working together.
I just know it.
Then my husband walked through the kitchen and said...
"What are you looking for?"
"My glasses."
He looked at me...
Paused...
Smiled that little smile...
And said...
"You're wearing them."
Friend...
There are few moments in life that humble a woman faster than spending twenty minutes looking for something that's already sitting on her face.
I didn't know whether to laugh...
Or charge myself with wasting my own time.
Now don't get me wrong.
I really do own several pairs.
One by my recliner.
One beside the bed.
One in the kitchen.
One in the truck.
One in the bathroom.
One in my purse.
At least...
That's where they're supposed to be.
Reality looks a little different.
One somehow ended up in the freezer.
Don't ask.
I was putting away groceries and apparently my brain clocked out before I did.
Another pair rode around in the cup holder of my truck for three weeks before I remembered where they lived.
One pair disappeared so completely...
I'm convinced they're living with all the missing socks.
Probably having little baby reading glasses together.
Honestly...
If somebody invents reading glasses that beep when you clap your hands...
Take my money.
I'll buy four pairs.
Maybe five.
Because I'll lose the first four before I get home.

I truly read every one, and many of my future stories come straight from conversations with women just like you.
You know what's funny?
The older I get...
The less embarrassed I am by these little moments.
Because they're not really mistakes.
They're proof that we've lived.
We've raised families.
Worked jobs.
Cooked thousands of meals.
Remembered everybody else's appointments.
Packed lunches.
Found missing shoes.
Signed permission slips.
Paid bills.
Remembered birthdays.
Picked up prescriptions.
Bought groceries.
Made Christmas magical.
Held everybody together.
Our minds have been carrying everybody else's lists for decades.
So if we occasionally lose a pair of reading glasses...
I'd say we've earned that right.
Besides...
Half the fun is laughing about it afterward.
Because here's what I've discovered.
The women who laugh the hardest...
Are usually the ones who've lived the fullest.
They know perfection isn't the goal anymore.
Peace is.
Connection is.
A good laugh around the kitchen table is.
That's why I love these little stories.
Because somewhere out there...
Another woman is reading this with her reading glasses sitting on top of her head...
While wondering where in the world she left them.
Friend...
You're in good company.
