Friend...
I used to dream about a quiet house.
Oh, I dreamed about it.
Back when there were shoes by every door...
Someone yelling, "Mom!"
The television in one room.
The radio in another.
A dog barking because a leaf blew across the yard.
And somebody opening the refrigerator every seven minutes like supper might magically appear.
I used to think...
"If I could just have a little peace and quiet..."
Well...
Be careful what you wish for.
Because one day...
It happens.
The kids grow up.
The schedules slow down.
The toys disappear.
The backpacks are gone.
The laundry pile gets suspiciously small.
And the house...
Gets quiet.
Really quiet.
The kind of quiet where you can hear the ice maker drop one lonely cube into the freezer.
❤️ Pull Up a Chair, Friend...
If you've ever looked around your house and realized life has changed...
You're not alone.
At RusticRootsPantry.com, you'll find funny stories, comforting recipes, digital cookbooks, and a front porch full of laughter for every season of life.
The funny thing is...
I finally got the quiet house I'd always wanted.
Now I find myself turning on the television...
Not because I'm watching it.
Just because somebody ought to be talking.
Sometimes I leave the kitchen radio playing while I fold towels.
Not because I love the music.
Because silence can feel awfully loud.
Then I'll walk past a bedroom...
Open the door...
And remember.
That's where somebody used to dump their backpack.
That's where socks mysteriously multiplied.
That's where I'd remind somebody—for the fifteenth time—that dirty dishes belong in the kitchen.
Funny how the things that once drove us crazy...
Become the very things we miss.
Now don't misunderstand me.
I still enjoy a peaceful morning with my sweet tea.
I still appreciate not stepping on toy cars in the hallway.
And I certainly don't miss washing twelve towels every other day.
But every once in a while...
I'd gladly trip over a pair of shoes if it meant hearing those young voices again.
Life has a way of changing us.
One season we're praying for bedtime.
The next season we're smiling at old photographs.
Then laughing because we remember who colored on the wall...
And who blamed the dog.
Friend...
That's the funny thing about motherhood.
It keeps changing.
But it never really ends.
❤️ Friend... Can I Ask You Something?
What's one thing you used to complain about...
That you'd happily welcome back for just one afternoon?
Tell me in the comments.
I have a feeling we're all carrying a few memories that still make us smile.
These days...
The quiet doesn't make me sad.
It makes me grateful.
Grateful for every slammed cabinet.
Every loud family dinner.
Every overflowing laundry basket.
Every "Mom, where's my..."
Because those noisy days became beautiful memories.
And even though the house is quieter now...
It isn't empty.
It's filled with stories.
Laughter.
Love.
And enough memories to last a lifetime.
So if your house feels a little quieter these days...
Friend...
Pull up a chair.
You're among women who understand exactly what that sounds like.
