I Opened the Hall Closet...
and Found Three Versions of My Life
Come Sit Awhile with Mama T
Friend...
I wasn't trying to organize the hall closet.
I was looking for a flashlight.
Simple enough.
Open the door...
Grab the flashlight...
Close the door.
That was the plan.
Instead...
The closet exhaled.
A beach chair hit my shin.
Three reusable grocery bags attacked my ankles.
Something made of Tupperware flew past my ear.
And I stood there thinking...
"Well...
Apparently I've discovered the archaeological dig of my own life."
I didn't find a flashlight.
But I did find...
Five rolls of Christmas wrapping paper.
A sewing basket I thought I'd loaned somebody in 2018.
Three umbrellas.
None of which worked.
A box labeled "Important."
Nothing inside was important.
❤️ Pull Up a Chair, Friend...
If you've ever opened one closet looking for one thing...
...and walked away two hours later wondering why you own seventeen reusable grocery bags and a bread machine from 1996...
Bless your heart.
You're among friends.
At RusticRootsPantry.com, we laugh about the little moments that remind us we're not falling apart...
We're simply living full lives.
Because life after 50 isn't about having a perfect house.
It's about having stories worth telling.
The farther I dug...
The stranger it got.
I found a casserole carrier.
No casserole.
An empty photo album.
A single oven mitt.
Whose partner apparently entered witness protection years ago.
Then...
I found a little pair of toddler shoes.
Tiny.
Scuffed.
Well loved.
Friend...
I just sat down right there on the floor.
Those shoes belonged to one of my babies.
Now that baby has babies.
How did that happen?
One minute you're chasing toddlers who refuse to wear shoes...
The next...
You're asking your grandkids if they know how to reset your television.
Life is funny like that.
One closet can hold thirty years.
My husband wandered by.
Looked at the explosion spilling into the hallway.
Didn't ask a single question.
He simply stepped over a box...
Looked at me...
And said...
"So...
We organizing...
Or just reminiscing?"
I said...
"A little of both."
He nodded.
Like he'd been married long enough to know...
There wasn't a correct answer.
Friend...
That's when I realized...
The clutter wasn't really clutter.
It was proof we'd lived.
Birthday decorations.
Old recipes stained with gravy.
Vacation souvenirs.
School programs.
Handwritten notes.
Things we'd forgotten...
Until they reminded us who we used to be.
❤️ Tell Me I'm Not the Only One...
What's the strangest thing you've found while cleaning out a closet, drawer, attic, or pantry?
Did you keep it...
Or did you stand there wondering why on earth you'd saved it?
I have a feeling we're all one old casserole dish away from a therapy session.
By the time I finished...
The flashlight was exactly where it was supposed to be.
Right on the top shelf.
Visible the whole time.
Friend...
I had spent nearly two hours looking everywhere except...
The obvious place.
Which, now that I think about it...
Pretty much describes half my life.
Looking for peace.
Looking for purpose.
Looking for happiness.
When most of it has been sitting right in front of me all along.
Sometimes hidden behind a beach chair.
Sometimes behind a box marked "Important."
But always there.
Waiting patiently.
