Friend...
There ought to be a law.
Not a suggestion.
A full-blown federal law.
The moment a woman over fifty finally sits down...
Everybody in a three-mile radius suddenly remembers she exists.
I can be invisible all afternoon.
Nobody needs anything.
Nobody says a word.
The house is quiet.
The phone is quiet.
Even the dog is asleep.
But the second...
And I mean the very second...
My backside touches that recliner...
It's like somebody flips the emergency broadcast system.
"Mama?"
"Can you help me?"
"Where's the tape?"
"Have you seen my charger?"
"What's for supper?"
The dog suddenly needs outside.
The phone rings.
Somebody texts.
The ice maker starts making enough noise to sound like it's rebuilding the Titanic.
And somehow...
I become Customer Service for the entire household.
❤️ Pull Up a Chair, Friend...
If you've ever hidden in the bathroom just to eat one cookie in peace...
Honey...
You are among your people.
Around here at RusticRootsPantry.com, we laugh about real life, real families, and the beautiful circus we somehow keep running every single day.
Yesterday...
I made the mistake of announcing...
"I think I'll sit down for just a minute."
Friend...
That sentence should've come with a tornado warning.
Within thirty seconds...
My husband hollered...
"Have you seen my glasses?"
The funny thing?
They were on his head.
I know...
Because I put them there after he couldn't find them yesterday.
Then my phone buzzed.
A spam call.
Wonderful.
Then the dog walked over...
Stared directly into my soul...
And sneezed.
On my leg.
Thank you, Winston.
Just when I thought the excitement was over...
The dryer buzzed.
Now listen...
If dryers could fold clothes...
I'd nominate them for sainthood.
But no.
That buzzer wasn't announcing good news.
It was announcing...
"Congratulations.
Now you get to do the rest."
So I ignored it.
For exactly forty-seven seconds.
Then guilt showed up wearing an apron.
"You really should fold those towels."
Friend...
Who invited guilt?
Nobody.
Then I noticed crumbs on the coffee table.
I don't even remember eating crackers.
At this age...
Evidence appears before memories do.
Then I looked around.
The blanket was crooked.
The pillows were squished.
There was one sock...
Just one...
Laying in the hallway like it had been abandoned by civilization.
And somehow...
I knew exactly whose sock it wasn't.
How is it possible...
That one sock can travel farther than I have all summer?
Then my husband walked by...
Looked at me...
And asked...
"You resting?"
Friend...
I almost got arrested.
❤️ Friend... Tell Me I'm Not Alone
What's the fastest someone has interrupted your "quiet time?"
Before the recliner closed?
Before the coffee cooled?
Before you even sat down?
Tell me in the comments.
Y'all make me laugh harder than television ever has.
Here's what I've learned...
Our homes aren't loud because we're failing.
They're loud because they're full of life.
Somebody needs us.
Somebody loves us.
Somebody trusts us enough to yell...
"Mom!"
Or...
"Where are my keys?"
Even though they're forty-three years old.
And one day...
The house will get quiet.
Quieter than we ever imagined.
So maybe...
Just maybe...
I'll answer one more question.
Find one more pair of glasses.
Let the dog out one more time.
And fold one more basket of towels.
Not because I have to.
Because someday...
I'll probably miss it.
Now...
Will somebody please answer one question for me?
Who keeps putting that one sock in my hallway?
Because I'm starting to think it has its own driver's license.
