I Didn't Mean to Eavesdrop...

But the Grocery Store Gave Me

Front-Row Seats

Come Sit Awhile with Mama T

Friend...

I wasn't being nosey.

I was just standing in line.

There's a difference.

Now...

If somebody chooses to have a full-volume conversation three feet from the bananas...

Well...

That's not eavesdropping.

That's public programming.

The grocery store has become the greatest free entertainment in America.

Forget cable.

Just grab a shopping cart and head toward Produce.

You'll hear things that make you question humanity.

Last week, I watched one husband pick up a watermelon...

Look his wife dead in the eyes...

And ask...

"Do these grow on trees?"

Friend...

That poor woman blinked three times.

She wasn't deciding how to answer.

She was deciding whether prison orange was her color.

I quietly pushed my cart to the next aisle...

Because I didn't want to become a witness.

❤️ Pull Up a Chair, Friend...

If you've ever gone to the grocery store for bread...

And somehow came home with candles, paper towels, a bag of chocolate, and absolutely no bread...

Honey...

You're among friends.

Around here at RusticRootsPantry.com, we laugh at the little everyday moments that remind us none of us have this life completely figured out.

Come sit awhile.

A few minutes later...

A little boy looked at his mama and whispered...

Loud enough for the entire county to hear...

"Mama...

That lady has a mustache."

Friend...

The silence...

You could've heard a marshmallow hit sweet tea.

His mama looked absolutely horrified.

The lady?

She laughed so hard she snorted.

Then she leaned down and said...

"Honey...

It took me twenty years to grow this thing."

The whole checkout line erupted.

Right then and there...

We all became cousins.

That's what I love about women our age.

We've finally reached the point where embarrassment packs its bags and leaves.

At twenty-five...

I'd have wanted to disappear.

At fifty-five...

I'm asking what brand of tweezers she uses.

Then there was the sweet older gentleman...

Standing in front of forty-seven kinds of barbecue sauce.

He finally sighed...

Pulled out his phone...

And said...

"Honey...

Which one did you tell me NOT to buy?"

Without missing a beat...

His wife answered...

"The one you're holding."

He slowly looked down...

Smiled...

And said...

"I knew there was a reason I married you."

Friend...

If that isn't love after forty...

I don't know what is.

It's not candlelight dinners.

It's surviving aisle seven together.

I've noticed something over the years.

Women our age don't just go grocery shopping anymore.

We collect stories.

We wave at strangers.

We compliment another woman's blouse.

We help somebody reach the top shelf.

We tell young mamas...

"You're doing just fine."

And somehow...

We all leave feeling just a little less alone.

❤️ Friend... I Need to Know

What's the funniest thing you've ever overheard while grocery shopping?

Or...

What's the funniest thing you've accidentally said out loud in public?

Tell me in the comments.

I promise...

I've probably done worse.

Some people think a grocery store is just a place to buy food.

I think it's one of the last places where complete strangers still laugh together.

Where somebody will tell you your shoes are cute.

Where another lady recommends the best frozen pie.

Where a cashier asks how your day's going...

And actually waits for the answer.

Maybe that's why I keep going back.

Well...

That...

And apparently I enjoy spending forty dollars on groceries and sixty dollars on things that weren't on my list.

Don't judge me.

The seasonal aisle practically flirts.
