Come Sit Awhile with Mama T

Friend...

I don't know who needs to hear this...

But cleaning the house is basically just resetting it back to factory settings.

It lasts...

Maybe eleven minutes.

If you're lucky.

Yesterday morning...

I vacuumed.

I dusted.

I mopped.

I fluffed pillows that nobody appreciates except me.

Folded blankets.

Straightened magazines.

Lit a candle that smelled like fresh linen...

Which, by the way...

Is a bold scent choice for a woman who lives with people.

I stood there...

Hands on my hips...

Admiring my work.

Friend...

That house looked so pretty...

I almost took my own shoes off before walking through it.

Then...

My husband came home.

❤️ Pull Up a Chair, Friend...

If you've ever cleaned your whole house...

Only to watch somebody destroy it before the mop water dried...

Friend...

You're home.

At RusticRootsPantry.com, we celebrate real homes, real kitchens, real laughter, and real women who know perfection is highly overrated.

He walked in...

Dropped his boots.

Set the mail on the kitchen counter.

Laid his keys beside the mail.

Hung his cap...

Not on the hook.

Beside the hook.

One inch.

One tiny inch.

Close enough to make me twitch.

Then...

He opened the refrigerator.

Closed it.

Opened it again.

Closed it.

Didn't eat anything.

Apparently he and I attended the same Refrigerator Opening Academy.

Then...

He made a sandwich.

Friend...

How does one sandwich require every knife in the kitchen?

There was mayonnaise on the counter.

Mustard on the counter.

The bread bag was open.

Cheese sitting out.

One pickle...

Just...

Laying there.

Like it had given up.

Then came the dog.

Now...

I love that sweet dog.

But apparently...

He believes freshly mopped floors are simply a suggestion.

One muddy paw.

Two muddy paws.

Then...

Zoomies.

Across.

My.

Living room.

Friend...

That dog hit every clean floor in the house like he was qualifying for NASCAR.

About that time...

The phone rang.

I sat down.

Stared at the mess...

And laughed.

Because honestly...

What else are you going to do?

You can either cry...

Or realize your house looks lived in...

Because...

It is.

Those fingerprints?

Somebody loves being here.

Those shoes by the door?

Someone came home.

The blanket tossed across the couch?

Somebody got comfortable enough to take a nap.

That one lonely pickle on the counter?

Okay...

I still don't have an explanation for that.

❤️ Friend... Tell Me the Truth

What's the fastest you've ever watched your clean house become messy?

Five minutes?

Thirty seconds?

Before you even put the cleaning supplies away?

Tell me I'm not alone.

Y'all have the funniest stories.

You know...

When I was younger...

I thought a perfect house meant I was doing something right.

Now...

I think laughter is a much better measurement.

The older I get...

The more I realize...

Nobody remembers spotless floors.

They remember laughing around the kitchen table.

Birthday cakes.

Sunday dinners.

Grandkids running through the house.

The smell of homemade cookies.

And feeling welcome enough...

To leave their shoes by the door.

Life happens.

Dust happens.

Laundry happens.

People happen.

Thank goodness.

Because I'd rather have a house full of love...

Than a house nobody's afraid to mess up.

Although...

If somebody could at least put the pickle back...

I'd appreciate it.
